Christmas Church Services in the UK

Whether you are looking for a candlelit carol service, a family Christingle, or a traditional Midnight Mass, every church in the country opens its doors at Christmas. This guide explains what is available and how to find a service near you.

Quick answer

Church Near Me guides you through Christmas at UK churches — Christingle and crib services for children, nine lessons and carols, Midnight Mass and Christmas Day worship. Services are free, open to everyone, and the popular ones fill early.

Types of Christmas Service

Carol Service

A service of carols and scripture readings telling the story of Christ's birth. The most celebrated format is Nine Lessons and Carols, first sung at King's College Cambridge in 1918 and broadcast nationally on BBC Radio 4 each Christmas Eve. Many churches hold carol services on the Sundays before Christmas, and most are free and open to all.

Christingle Service

A family-friendly service, usually on Christmas Eve afternoon, centred on the Christingle — an orange decorated with candles, sweets and a red ribbon symbolising Jesus as the light of the world. The Children's Society introduced Christingle to the UK in 1968, and it is now one of the most widely held Christmas services in Church of England churches.

Midnight Mass

Held late on Christmas Eve — traditionally at midnight — to mark the birth of Christ. Common in Catholic, Anglican and some Methodist churches. The service includes carols, the nativity Gospel and Holy Communion. It is one of the most atmospheric services in the Christian year and draws many who rarely attend church at other times.

Christmas Day Service

Most churches hold a principal morning service on Christmas Day, typically between 8am and 11am. This is often a service of Holy Communion. Families with children particularly enjoy the informal, celebratory atmosphere that many parishes create on Christmas morning.

Advent Services

Advent — the four weeks before Christmas — has its own rich tradition of services. Advent carols, Advent processions by candlelight and quiet services of reflection are held in many cathedrals and larger parish churches throughout December.

Christmas at UK Cathedrals

UK cathedrals offer some of the most memorable Christmas experiences in the world. Services at Westminster Abbey, Canterbury Cathedral, York Minster, St Paul's Cathedral, Liverpool Cathedral and many others attract large congregations and visitors from around the country. Cathedral services often involve professional choirs and are frequently broadcast on BBC Radio and television.

Most cathedral Christmas services are free, though some require advance booking — particularly Midnight Mass and Christmas morning Communion. Check each cathedral's website from late November for booking details.
