## About

Malmesbury Abbey was founded around 676 AD and rose to become one of the most important Benedictine monasteries in medieval England. King Athelstan, regarded as the first king of all England (reigned 925–939), is buried here. The dramatic Romanesque south porch with its richly carved 12th-century biblical sculptures is internationally significant. The crossing tower collapsed around 1500 destroying the chancel, and the eastern parts of the abbey fell into ruin after the Dissolution; today the surviving Norman nave serves as Malmesbury's active Anglican parish church.
