## About

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King, Liverpool, known affectionately as 'Paddy's Wigwam' because of its distinctive tent-like silhouette, is one of the great post-war pieces of sacred architecture in Europe. Consecrated in 1967 to designs by Frederick Gibberd, it replaced a more conventional brick structure that had been started in 1930 to designs by Edwin Lutyens (whose immense crypt survives beneath). The futuristic circular building with its striking Crown of Thorns lantern tower stands at the top of Mount Pleasant, directly opposite Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral, with the two linked by Hope Street — a road that has come to symbolise Christian ecumenism in the city.
