## About

Newcastle Cathedral, formally the Cathedral Church of St Nicholas, was a medieval parish church raised to cathedral status in 1882 when the Diocese of Newcastle was created out of the Diocese of Durham. Its most celebrated feature is the 15th-century crown-shaped lantern tower — one of only four medieval lantern towers in the United Kingdom — which acted as a daymark for shipping on the River Tyne for over 500 years. A major restoration completed in 2021 reopened the cathedral with new exhibitions tracing 900 years of worship on the site.
