About Arundel Cathedral

Arundel Cathedral, formally the Cathedral Church of Our Lady and St Philip Howard, was designed by Joseph Hansom (inventor of the Hansom cab) and consecrated in 1873 as a parish church for the 15th Duke of Norfolk. It became a cathedral when the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton was created in 1965. Built in 13th-century French Gothic style, it dominates the West Sussex skyline alongside Arundel Castle. The cathedral houses the shrine of St Philip Howard, the 20th Earl of Arundel who was canonised in 1970 as one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales. The annual Corpus Christi 'Carpet of Flowers' procession is internationally famous.

What to Expect at a Roman Catholic Church

Roman Catholic worship centres on the Mass, the celebration of the Eucharist. A typical Mass includes readings from Scripture, a homily, the Liturgy of the Eucharist and Holy Communion, and usually lasts around an hour. Most parishes offer a Saturday evening Vigil Mass as well as Sunday morning Masses, along with regular opportunities for confession (reconciliation). Visitors of any background are welcome to attend.
