About Glasgow Cathedral (St Mungo's)
Glasgow Cathedral, also known as St Mungo's or the High Kirk of Glasgow, is the only medieval cathedral on the Scottish mainland to have survived the Reformation of 1560 substantially complete. Built largely between the 13th and 15th centuries on the site of an earlier Romanesque church, it stands above the tomb of St Mungo (Kentigern), the 6th-century bishop who founded the settlement that became Glasgow. The lower church or crypt is one of the finest pieces of Gothic architecture in Scotland and houses the tomb of the patron saint at its heart. Every year on St Mungo's Day (13 January) a special service of commemoration is held.
