About Newport Cathedral
Newport Cathedral, the Cathedral Church of St Woolos (St Gwynllyw), is the cathedral of the Diocese of Monmouth in the Church in Wales. Founded in the 6th century by St Gwynllyw, it stands on Stow Hill above the city of Newport. The cathedral is famous for its unique Norman porch — once the entrance to a separate church — and its 20th-century east end designed by John Hughes. It is one of the most ancient places of Christian worship in Wales.
