About Quarr Abbey

Quarr Abbey, formally the Abbey of Our Lady of Quarr, is a working Benedictine monastery of the Solesmes Congregation near Fishbourne on the Isle of Wight. Built between 1907 and 1912 for a French monastic community in exile, its remarkable brick church was designed by one of the monks, the architect Dom Paul Bellot, and is now Grade I listed. The abbey stands beside the ruins of a medieval Cistercian abbey founded in 1132. Visitors are welcome at the monks' sung worship, and the grounds include a tea shop, farm shop, visitor centre and woodland walks.

Notable facts about Quarr Abbey

  • Churches styled "abbey" trace their roots to monastic communities once led by an abbot or abbess, and many are among the oldest and most architecturally significant places of worship in the country.
  • The Roman Catholic Church is the largest Christian denomination in the world and in the UK, tracing its leadership in continuous succession from the Apostle Peter.
  • Quarr Abbey belongs to the Diocese of Portsmouth, the regional family of churches through which its tradition organises worship, clergy and community life.

What to Expect at a Roman Catholic Church

Roman Catholic worship centres on the Mass, the celebration of the Eucharist. A typical Mass includes readings from Scripture, a homily, the Liturgy of the Eucharist and Holy Communion, and usually lasts around an hour. Most parishes offer a Saturday evening Vigil Mass as well as Sunday morning Masses, along with regular opportunities for confession (reconciliation). Visitors of any background are welcome to attend.
