About Selby Abbey

Selby Abbey is one of the finest surviving examples of monastic architecture in northern England. Founded in 1069 by Benedict of Auxerre, it predates York Minster and was one of the first monastic foundations after the Norman Conquest. The building spans three centuries of medieval craftsmanship — Romanesque in the north transept, Early English in the choir, and Perpendicular in the nave clerestory. Its magnificent Washington Window in the north nave aisle contains heraldic glass bearing the arms of the Washington family, the ancestor design behind the Stars and Stripes of the American flag. A major fire in 1906 destroyed the roof and part of the tower, which were subsequently rebuilt. Today the Abbey serves as the parish church of Selby.
