About St Chad's Cathedral
St Chad's Cathedral is the metropolitan cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Birmingham and the seat of the Archbishop. Consecrated in 1841 to designs by Augustus Welby Pugin — the architect who also designed the interiors of the Houses of Parliament — it was the first Catholic cathedral to be built in England after the Reformation. Built in brick in the Early English Gothic style, it contains Pugin's own magnificently carved pulpit and an exceptional collection of medieval Flemish woodwork and stained glass. The cathedral shares the title 'St Chad' with the 7th-century Bishop of Lichfield, patron saint of the Midlands.
