About St Davids Cathedral
St Davids Cathedral stands at the heart of the smallest city in Britain — the city of St Davids in Pembrokeshire — on a site of Christian pilgrimage since the 6th century. The present building dates from the 12th century, built in a local purple-grey sandstone to designs combining Romanesque and early Gothic elements. It contains the shrine of St David, the patron saint of Wales, whose feast day (1 March) draws pilgrims from across the nation. The cathedral also houses the tomb of the Welsh king Rhys ap Gruffudd and relics of St Justinian. In medieval times, two pilgrimages to St Davids were considered equivalent to one to Rome.
