About St Edmundsbury Cathedral
St Edmundsbury Cathedral, originally the parish church of St James, stands in the heart of historic Bury St Edmunds beside the ruins of the great Benedictine Abbey that once housed the shrine of St Edmund, King and Martyr. It became a cathedral in 1914 when the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich was created. A major millennium project, completed in 2005, added the soaring Gothic-style central lantern tower designed by Stephen Dykes Bower — the only English cathedral tower built in the traditional Gothic manner in the 20th century. The cathedral remains an active centre of Anglican worship with a renowned choir and daily services.
