The church & its community

About St James The Great

Chester Cathedral — the Cathedral Church of Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary — occupies the site of a Benedictine abbey founded by Hugh of Avranches, the first Earl of Chester, in 1093. The cathedral is noted for its exceptional medieval choir stalls with elaborately carved misericords, and its magnificent Victorian restoration by George Gilbert Scott. It serves as the mother church of the Diocese of Chester.

What is worship in this tradition usually like?

Anglican (Church of England) worship follows the rhythm of the Book of Common Prayer and Common Worship. Sunday services often range from a said early-morning Holy Communion to a main mid-morning Sung Eucharist or Morning Prayer, and many parishes hold Choral Evensong later in the day. Services blend set liturgy, hymns, Scripture readings and a sermon. Everyone is welcome, whether you are exploring faith or returning to church.

This describes the wider tradition. The format at this particular church may vary.
