About St Oswald's Church
St Oswald's Church in Grasmere has stood at the heart of the Lake District village since the 14th century, named for the 7th-century Northumbrian king and Christian martyr St Oswald. It is best known as the burial place of the poet William Wordsworth, who lived nearby at Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount; he, his wife Mary, his sister Dorothy and several of his children lie under the eight yews he himself planted in the churchyard. The church has an unusual double-naved interior with a 17th-century timber roof and remains an active Anglican parish in the Diocese of Carlisle. The annual Rushbearing procession every July is one of the oldest surviving folk-religious customs in England.
