About Watts Cemetery Chapel

The Watts Cemetery Chapel was designed and decorated between 1896 and 1898 by Mary Seton Watts, wife of the Victorian painter G F Watts, as the mortuary chapel for Compton's new village cemetery. Built largely by villagers Mary trained in terracotta modelling, its richly symbolic exterior fuses Romanesque, Celtic and Art Nouveau motifs while the interior is covered floor to ceiling in gilded gesso reliefs. The chapel is Grade I listed and is one of the most complete and influential surviving works of the Arts and Crafts Movement in England. It sits alongside Watts Gallery — Artists' Village, where G F Watts is buried.

What is worship in this tradition usually like?

Anglican (Church of England) worship follows the rhythm of the Book of Common Prayer and Common Worship. Sunday services often range from a said early-morning Holy Communion to a main mid-morning Sung Eucharist or Morning Prayer, and many parishes hold Choral Evensong later in the day. Services blend set liturgy, hymns, Scripture readings and a sermon. Everyone is welcome, whether you are exploring faith or returning to church.

This describes the wider tradition. The format at this particular church may vary.
